The Hard Part Isn't Getting a Rare Sneaker, It's Keeping One
The polyurethane midsoles in many sought-after 1990s and 2000s sneakers begin breaking down from the moment they are made, a process collectors call shoe cancer, and the sealed, untouched storage prized by deadstock culture often speeds that decay rather than preventing it.

A boxed pair of a hard-to-find Air Jordan or Air Max looks like a stable object: a shape sealed against time, worth exactly what its scarcity says it's worth. It isn't stable. Inside the sole, a slow chemical process is already running, and it started the day the shoe was made, not the day it left a warehouse or a collector's closet.
The chemistry collectors call shoe cancer
Most rare running and basketball sneakers from the 1980s through the 2000s use polyurethane in the midsole, the cushioned layer between the upper and the outsole. Polyurethane is durable under normal use, but it is vulnerable to hydrolysis: airborne moisture works its way into the foam's molecular structure and breaks the bonds holding it together. Collectors have a blunt name for the result, shoe cancer. There is no cure once it sets in. The sole yellows, stiffens, and eventually crumbles into a texture closer to stale bread than rubber.
Certain models carry a reputation for this specific fragility: Nike's Air Max 1, 95, and 97, and Air Jordans 3 through 6, all built around polyurethane midsole units that were prized for cushioning at the time and are now the weak point of a decades-old shoe. Heat, humidity, and ultraviolet light speed the reaction along, which is why a pair stored in a hot garage or a sunlit shelf tends to fail years before one kept somewhere cool and dark.
Sealed is not the same as safe
The instinct to protect a valuable pair, keep it boxed, bagged, and untouched, works against the chemistry. Sealing a sneaker in plastic traps the ambient moisture already present in the foam rather than letting it dissipate, and a shoe that never flexes never pushes that moisture back out. Sneakers that are worn occasionally, even briefly, tend to hold up longer than ones left completely still for a decade, because gentle flexing works some of the trapped moisture out of the material. None of this reverses damage that has already started. It only affects how soon it starts to show.
That is a genuinely counterintuitive fact for a collecting culture built around the premise that untouched equals valuable. A deadstock pair, meaning one that has never been worn, is usually worth more than a worn one of the same rarity, precisely because it has been kept away from the conditions that would let it degrade gracefully.
What the market has built around the decay
The high end of the sneaker market has quietly adapted to this. Auction houses that have sold historically significant pairs, Sotheby's and Christie's among them, now treat documented condition and chain of custody as central to a sale rather than an afterthought. When Sotheby's auctioned a pair of Air Jordan 13s that Michael Jordan wore during the 1997 to 98 season chronicled in The Last Dance, the listing leaned on authentication and condition history nearly as much as on rarity itself; the pair sold for 2.2 million dollars in 2023. A shoe's story and its physical state have become inseparable from its price.
A separate industry has grown around the shoes that didn't get that kind of institutional care. Restoration companies such as NuShoe describe routinely rebuilding sneakers whose original midsoles have fully crumbled, a process that involves sourcing a donor sole from another pair, new or lightly used, and grafting it onto the surviving upper with industrial adhesive. It is a workaround, not a repair: the original cushioning unit is gone for good, and what returns to the owner is a hybrid of old upper and borrowed sole.
A different kind of care
Institutions that hold historical footwear long-term approach the same problem from the opposite direction. The Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, which holds one of the largest footwear collections in the world, practices conservation rather than restoration: minimal intervention, reversible treatments where possible, and a working assumption that a shoe's wear is evidence of its history rather than a flaw to erase. That philosophy sits at an angle to sneaker collecting, where an unworn pair is the ideal and any sign of use lowers what it is worth. A museum and a resale market are, in this narrow sense, evaluating the same object by opposite standards.
Not every kind of sneaker scarcity comes from chemistry. Some of it is manufactured by decision rather than decay: after ending its partnership with Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, in October 2022, Adidas was left holding an estimated 1.3 billion dollars in unsold Yeezy inventory. It took more than two years, into early 2025, to sell off the stock in stages, with a large share of the profit, reported at over 140 million euros by 2024, donated to organizations including the Anti-Defamation League. That kind of rarity is a corporate and legal outcome, reversible by a business decision. Hydrolysis is not reversible by anyone.
What actually helps, within limits
For someone who owns, or is considering buying, a genuinely rare pair from the era when polyurethane midsoles were standard, the honest framing is closer to owning a fragile antique than a stable investment. A few observed, low-intervention habits come up repeatedly among people who work with these materials professionally:
- Store away from direct light and heat, ideally somewhere cool, dry, and dark rather than a sunlit display shelf.
- Keep the shoe out of a fully sealed bag, and refresh any silica gel packets rather than relying on the ones that shipped in the original box years ago.
- Expect that wearing a pair occasionally, rather than never, is more often associated with slower breakdown than constant sealed storage.
None of these steps stop hydrolysis outright, and no restoration fully undoes it once it starts. That limit is worth stating plainly, because the sneaker market's language of grails and cop culture tends to treat rarity as a fixed, permanent fact about an object. For a shoe built on 1990s polyurethane, it isn't. The clock started before anyone found it.
