The Jacket Is the Uncertain Part of September Shorts

In Seoul, the last weeks of August can feel less like a hinge than an extension: warm pavement after dark, damp air, and little wind. Denim shorts may make sense well into September. The jacket often attached to them in transition-season styling is the less dependable half of the equation.

Five pictures cannot supply one climate

A recent set of five celebrity photographs, each credited to a different Instagram account, has been gathered as an argument for wearing denim shorts through September. The images document silhouettes and styling choices. They do not document one shared day, place, humidity level, or amount of time outdoors. Reading them as a single late-summer uniform requires an inference the photographs cannot support.

The location matters. The Korea Meteorological Administration's 1991 to 2020 normals place Seoul's warmest monthly mean in August, at 26.1 C. September is also the city's least windy month on average, at 1.9 m/s. Neither figure describes a particular commute, but together they put a limit on the familiar idea that late August reliably brings cool mornings and evenings.

September has recently behaved like summer

The recent record is sharper. Korea's nationwide September mean reached 24.7 C in 2024, the highest since the national series began in 1973. Seoul recorded six heat-wave days that month, its first September heat-wave occurrence since 1948. In 2025, the nationwide September mean was 23.0 C, second only to 2024; Seoul recorded both heat-wave and tropical-night conditions on September 5.

This does not prove every coming September will be hot, nor that a jacket is wrong. It does mean the calendar is weak evidence. For a Seoul day, shorts plus an optional outer layer is most credible when the layer answers a real condition: a cool forecast, rain, strong indoor air conditioning, or a long evening outside. If those conditions are absent, the honest transition may be no transition at all.
