The Wedge Heel Solved a Materials Problem Before a Comfort One

The modern wedge is often presented as the easier route back into heels. Its defining construction began as a response to material scarcity, while comfort still depends on height, pitch, fit, and the surface underfoot.

Seen beneath straight jeans, the newest wedge pump can look like a measured return to heels: a narrow toe, a low side profile, and solid material where a separate heel would leave air. That last detail is often translated into comfort. It is better understood first as construction.

The filled-in arch came from scarcity

The modern cork wedge emerged in Florence under unusually constrained conditions. After Fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia, League of Nations sanctions ran from November 1935 to July 1936. Benito Mussolini's government declared an economic program of autarky in March 1936. The Ferragamo Foundation says higher-grade steel was requisitioned for armaments and other materials grew scarce. Salvatore Ferragamo responded with cork wedges, alongside uppers made from hemp, felt, and fish skin.

Cork was not merely a softer-looking substitute. Packed beneath the arch in pressed layers, it replaced work previously assigned to a steel shank, the reinforcing piece between heel and forefoot. Italy had cork available, and the continuous mass could support a raised shoe without the familiar exposed heel construction.

Even the patent year resists a tidy caption. The Ferragamo Foundation and the Treccani biographical archive give 1937. Italy's national archival system lists 1936, while a current Ferragamo heritage page says 1938. Those records agree more clearly on cause than date: the wedge was a materials solution shaped by autarkic scarcity, not originally a category-wide promise of ease.

A wedge describes support, not sensation

A continuous sole may feel steadier than a thin heel to some wearers, but the silhouette alone cannot establish comfort. In a 2005 walking study of 20 young women, discomfort rose as heel height increased; a total-contact insert reduced pressure beneath the medial forefoot and improved reported comfort. A 2019 experiment using four kinds of 9-centimeter heels found that a wide, separate heel produced a lower peak friction demand than the wedge tested. Both studies were small, controlled experiments, not verdicts on every foot or shoe.

For a straight-jean pairing, then, the useful question sits below the hem. Compare the heel rise with any forefoot platform, check whether the upper holds the foot without pinching, and notice the outsole on the floors and pavements of the occasion. A wedge can be the more workable heel. Its name alone does not make it one.
